    NIR-to-VIS Face Recognition via Embedding Relations and Coordinates of the Pairwise Features

    NIR-to-VIS face recognition is identifying faces of two different domains by extracting domain-invariant features. However, this is a challenging problem due to the two different domain characteristics, and the lack of NIR face dataset. In order to reduce domain discrepancy while using the existing face recognition models, we propose a 'Relation Module' which can simply add-on to any face recognition models. The local features extracted from face image contain information of each component of the face. Based on two different domain characteristics, to use the relationships between local features is more domain-invariant than to use it as it is. In addition to these relationships, positional information such as distance from lips to chin or eye to eye, also provides domain-invariant information. In our Relation Module, Relation Layer implicitly captures relationships, and Coordinates Layer models the positional information. Also, our proposed Triplet loss with conditional margin reduces intra-class variation in training, and resulting in additional performance improvements. Different from the general face recognition models, our add-on module does not need to pre-train with the large scale dataset. The proposed module fine-tuned only with CASIA NIR-VIS 2.0 database. With the proposed module, we achieve 14.81% rank-1 accuracy and 15.47% verification rate of 0.1% FAR improvements compare to two baseline models

    Hybrid XML Data Model Architecture for Efficient Document Management

    XML has been known as a document standard in representation and exchange of data on the Internet, and is also used as a standard language for the search and reuse of scattered documents on the Internet. The issues related to XML are how to model data on effective and efficient management of semi-structured data and how to actually store the modeled data when implementing a XML contents management system. Previous researches on XML have limitations in (1) reproduction of XML documents from the stored data, (2) retrieval of XML sub-graph from search, (3) supporting only top-down search, not full-search, and (4) dependency of data structure on XML documents. The purpose of this paper is to present a hybrid XML data model architecture for the storage and search of XML document data. By representing both data and structure views of XML documents, this new XML data model technique overcomes the limitations of previous researches on data model for XML documents as well as the existing database systems such as relational and object-oriented data model

    Tempcore Process Simulator to Analyze Microstructural Evolution of Quenched and Tempered Rebar

    Featured Application Proposed process simulator can be widely applied to parameter design of industrial Tempcore process with reduced cost and time. Abstract Tempcore process simulator (TPS) has been developed in this study to analyze the microstructural evolution of quenched and tempered rebar. There has been an increasing need to relate the complex microstructures to the resulting properties of quenched and tempered rebar. However, information on such relationships typically requires precise thermal histories imposed on the workpiece. Therefore, TPS, capable of simulating the Tempcore process, has been developed to produce high-fidelity data. TPS mainly consists of a vacuum induction furnace, pilot rolling mill, box furnace, and cooling unit to simulate shop floor operations. A series of experimental tests were successfully carried out with various parameters, such as reheating temperature, water flow, water pressure, and cooling time. The effects of chemical compositions and cooling time on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of quenched and tempered rebar have been analyzed to validate the performance of TPS.     AbstractWe investigated and analyzed the flora of vascular plants around ridgelines in the Palgongsan Provincial Park to suggest fundamental data for establishing preservation plans of them. The flora of vascular plants around ridgelines was a total of 587 taxa including 102 familiies, 314 genera, 518 species, 58 varieties, 7 forma, and 4 subspecies. Rare plants designated by Korea Forest Service were 27 taxa including Semiquilegia mandshurica and Aristolochia manshuriensis. Endemic plants were 15 taxa including Clematis trichotoma and Carex okamotoi. Floristic special plants were a total of 100 taxa including all five classes. Naturalized plants were 13 taxa including Phytolacca Americana, ambrosia, and Taraxacum officinale

    Realization of giant magnetoelectricity in helimagnets

    We show that low field magnetoelectric (ME) properties of helimagnets Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2(Fe1-xAlx)12O22 can be efficiently tailored by Al-substitution level. As x increases, the critical magnetic field for switching electric polarization is systematically reduced from ~1 T down to ~1 mT, and the ME susceptibility is greatly enhanced to reach a giant value of 2.0 x 10^4 ps/m at an optimum x = 0.08. We find that control of nontrivial orbital moment in the octahedral Fe sites through the Al-substitution is crucial for fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy and obtaining the conspicuously improved ME characteristics

    Does Herpes Virus Reactivation Affect Prognosis in Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss?

    Objectives Several etiologies have been proposed to underlie idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL), including viral infection, vascular disturbance, and immune-mediated mechanisms. However, none of these mechanisms are conclusive. Should ISSNHL be caused by reactivation of a viral infection, antiviral treatment would be an important option. Thus, in this study, we reported the prognosis according to serologic test results of herpes viruses in patients with ISSNHL. We also evaluated treatment response with acyclovir and corticosteroids versus corticosteroids alone in herpes simplex virus (HSV) seropositive ISSNHL patients. Methods We compared hematologic examinations and the results of audiometry testing in 232 patients with ISSNHL. Statistical analyses for initial hearing impairment, progression of hearing impairment, recovery of hearing loss, and laboratory results were performed in all patients. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Results The 232 ISSNHL patients were divided into two subgroups according to HSV immunoglobulin M (IgM) serologic results (seropositive or seronegative). When the seropositive group was compared to the seronegative group, age, gender, body mass index (BMI), white blood cell, absolute neutrophil count, absolute monocyte count, and platelet count were not significantly different. Initial hearing level, final recovery hearing level, and recovery time were also not significantly different between the two groups (P>0.05). Though there were no significant differences in age, gender, BMI, or viral HSV IgM titer, the two groups had similar initial hearing level, final recovery hearing level, and recovery time. The difference in hearing threshold before and after treatment was larger (18.7±37.1) in the group receiving antiviral medication than in the corticosteroids group (11.0±44.5), but this difference was not significant (P=0.619). Conclusion There was no significant difference of prognosis between the patients with and without reactivation of HSV. In addition, there seems to be no benefit for the treatment of acyclovir combined with the corticosteroids in the patients with ISSNHL

    UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for Fe+

    The United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT)Widefield Infrared Survey for Fe+ (UWIFE) is a 180 deg2 imaging survey of the first Galactic quadrant (7° < l < 62° |b| <1°.5) that uses a narrow-band filter centred on the [Fe II] 1.644-μm emission line. The [Fe II] 1.644-μm emission is a good tracer of dense, shock-excited gas, and the survey will probe violent environments around stars: star-forming regions, evolved stars, and supernova remnants, among others. The UWIFE survey is designed to complement the existing UKIRTW idefield Infrared Survey for H2 (UWISH2). The survey will also complement existing broad-band surveys. The observed images have a nominal 5Ï? detection limit of 18.7 mag for point sources, with a median seeing of 0.83 arcsec. For extended sources, we estimate a surface brightness limit of 8.1 Ã? 10-20 W m-2 arcsec-2.
